Who can borrow a Thing

Any library cardholder may borrow an item from the Library of Things collection. Library cards are available for free to anyone who pays property tax in Joplin, including businesses.  Non-resident cards are available to anyone who pays an in lieu of tax fee of $50 per year for a household (the average property tax paid per household by Joplin residents).

Library cards may be used to access digital media services, submit inter-library loan requests, and borrow physical items from library collections (including Library of Things). You can learn more about getting a Library card here.

How to borrow your Thing

Available Library of Things items may be checked out at any of our self-check stations.  Some of the available Things may be represented by a place card; to check them out, take the place card up to the Circulation Desk where library staff will retrieve your Thing.  If your Thing is not currently available, you may place a hold on the item and you will be notified when it is ready for checkout.  All items from the Library of Things collection must be picked up at and returned during open hours.

You can borrow up to three Things at a time for a one-week period. We understand some Things require additional time beyond seven days, so all Library of Things materials have the option to renew one time for an additional week of use if there is no hold on the item.

Some Things may require additional components, such as batteries, please read the entire description before borrowing.

How to return your Thing

All Things must be returned during open hours.  Make sure all contents are placed back inside the box/container, and bring your Thing to the library’s Circulation Desk.

Items from the Library of Things collection may not be returned through the library book drop.
