Joplin Public Library Secures Grant to Replace Patron-Facing Computers

Joplin, MO – 5/7/25 – The Joplin Public Library is pleased to announce that it has received a grant to replace 36 patron-facing computers used throughout the library. These machines support some of the library’s most frequently used public services, including the computer lab, catalog stations, database access points, and other on-site digital resources.

The funding, provided through the Library Services and Technology Act, will allow the library to retire aging computer systems and replace them with updated equipment better suited to current patron needs. This refresh will improve reliability, reduce downtime, and help ensure faster, more consistent access for community members who depend on library technology for research, job searching, education, communication, and everyday digital tasks.

“We are incredibly grateful for this grant, which helps us continue offering dependable access to essential technology,” said Justin Kelly, IT Manager. “Patron computers are one of the most visible and heavily used parts of our digital services. Replacing these systems allows us to better support both current demand and future growth.”

Use of the computer lab and other in-library digital services continues to grow year over year. These upgrades will help the Joplin Public Library keep pace with that demand while providing patrons with the equipment they need to access information, complete important tasks, and participate more fully in today’s digital world.

The Joplin Public Library extends its sincere appreciation to LSTA and Dell computers for their generous support and ongoing commitment to public libraries. The upgrade is expected to be completed by Summer Reading, helping ensure continued excellence in library services during one of the library’s busiest seasons.

This technology improvement project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.
