Summer Reading Art Challenge 2019 Artists’ Reception

Join us for an opening reception for Summer Reading Art Challenge 2019! This reception is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Registration and library card NOT necessary.

Entries from all three categories—adults, teens, and kids—of Summer Reading Art Challenge 2019 will be on display in the Local History, Genealogy, and Post Reading Room wing inside Joplin Public Library from Thursday, August 8, 2019 through Sunday, September 29, 2019.

The purpose of the Summer Reading Art Challenge is to encourage exploration of the visual arts through creating an artwork based on Missouri’s state-wide theme for Summer Reading. Artworks in this year’s exhibit are inspired by space, the Summer Reading theme for 2019.

Children’s Summer Reading Ending Celebration

10:30-11:15: Tommy Terrific will perform magic tricks representing the exploration of space, from celestial objects such as planets and stars to exploration equipment, such as rockets and space shuttles. Throughout the show, the kids will learn interesting facts about our universe and the history behind space exploration. Join us before and afterward for Chik-Fil-A ice cream, popcorn, games, and face painting from Cheeky Fun (10:00-11:30)!

Ages 2-10 years old

Join us for a special event with local author/illustrator Izzy B. He will read his newest book, Imaginary Fiends, and offer interactive story extensions afterward! Books will be available to purchase at the event.

The MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival takes place in 400 venues across 6 continents during one week. For the first time, this event is coming to Joplin and we’re celebrating at Joplin Public Library.

Each year, ten short films are selected and shown across the world. Audiences are asked to vote on which film they think is best. The winner will be announced on October 7, 2019. One World, One Week, One Festival – You Be the Judge!

MANHATTAN SHORT is an event that takes place in 400 venues across 6 continents during one week, and is breaking into the Library System across the USA.

Each year ten short films (Two Hour Show) which screen across the world. Audiences are asked to vote for the one they think is best. Votes are tallied by you – emailed to us and we announce the winner on Monday Oct 7.
