The library is grateful to our terrific volunteers who lighten the staff’s load in many ways. If you’re interested in volunteering at the library, please stop by and fill out a volunteer application or complete the form. Volunteers generally work shelving materials or assisting in the Technical Processing department with materials processing, but if you have special skills, we’ll see what we can find for you!

Reference Assistant

20 hours per week and applicant must be able to work evenings and weekends (usually every other weekend).  This position combines professional and clerical duties in providing reference service to the public.  Bachelor’s degree is required.

Applicant must possess

  • Skill in application and interpretation of library policies and procedures;
  • Good communication and public relations skills and must be able to deal with the public in a firm yet gracious manner;
  • High clerical aptitude and excellent keyboard skills with working knowledge of library automation system, basic computer programs, and the Internet;
  • Wide knowledge of books and authors and interest in a variety of subjects;
  • Excellent grammar and telephone manners.

Duties include

  • Assisting patrons in finding information, in person, on the telephone, and via email;
  • Providing assistance to patrons in searching the library’s automated databases;
  • Using and assisting patrons in the use of the equipment in the reference department, including photocopiers, scanners, fax machines, personal computers, scanners, typewriters, e-readers, and microform readers;
  • Assisting patrons in the Computer Lab and with computers in Reference department;
  • Processing magazines and newspapers;
  • Opening and closing the Reference department;
  • Providing reader’s advisory assistance.

Salary is $12.0953/hour and benefits include vacation, sick and personal leave.
